How we test

At Oh Fantabulous, we test children's bags the way they're meant to be used—by actual children, in their daily lives, for extended periods.

We don't believe in quick impressions or superficial assessments. Instead, each bag undergoes weeks of real-world testing with a group of young testers, usually our own children.

When a new bag arrives for testing, it immediately replaces our child's current backpack for a minimum of three weeks. This means it's used for school, playdates, weekend activities, and everything in between. There's no better way to discover a bag's true qualities than by having a child wear it day in and day out—dealing with snack spills, forgotten homework, rainy mornings, and all the other adventures that make up a child's life.

Throughout this extensive testing period, we evaluate six critical categories that determine whether a bag is truly worthy of recommendation. We watch how children interact with each feature, note when something causes frustration, and identify the details that make their daily routines smoother. We believe that a great children's bag needs to excel in multiple areas to truly serve your child's needs, and our comprehensive testing process ensures that every bag we recommend meets our high standards.

Aesthetic

Let’s face it: kids care about how their bag looks. A lot. We evaluate each bag’s visual appeal, knowing aesthetics are subjective but undeniably important. From vibrant colors to playful patterns, we look for designs that spark joy and pride in young users. Age-appropriate themes matter, but so do the finer details—quality materials, thoughtful finishing, and a cohesive brand identity. We also verify that the product matches its marketing images because no one likes a bait-and-switch. A bag that excites a child is one they’ll actually want to use, and if it avoids the dreaded morning meltdown, well, that’s a parenting win worth celebrating.

Ergonomics and Child Friendliness

A bag isn’t just a bag—it’s a daily companion for a growing body. We scrutinize sizing and weight distribution, ensuring the bag fits comfortably across different age groups. Straps must be wide and padded enough for small shoulders, yet adjustable to grow with your child. Zippers, buckles, and closures? They’ve got to work for little hands, not frustrate them. And let’s not forget the empty weight: lighter is always better for young backs.

Harness System

The harness is where comfort meets functionality. We examine padding quality and placement on shoulder straps, ensuring they don’t dig or slip. Chest straps must be easy to adjust, even for small hands, and stay secure during active use. We test for pressure points and evaluate how the harness performs when the bag is packed with school supplies or weekend gear. After all, a well-designed harness isn’t just about comfort—it’s about protecting developing bodies from unnecessary strain.

Water resistance

Kids are magnets for messes, so a bag needs to handle the elements. We test resistance to water spray that simulate light rain and spills. Water-resistant coatings, protected zippers, and sealed seams are key to keeping contents dry. We also assess how well the interior handles wet swimsuits or leaky water bottles and measure drying times after exposure. Durability after repeated wet-and-dry cycles is crucial because a bag that falls apart after a few rainy days isn’t doing its job.

Safety Features

When it comes to kids, safety is non-negotiable. We look for reflective elements to boost visibility in low light and ensure bags are free from choking hazards or sharp edges. Non-toxic materials are a must. Stability matters too—no one wants a bag that tips over at the slightest nudge. We also research recalls and safety concerns to ensure we’re recommending products you can trust. Because peace of mind is just as important as practicality.

Storage Capabilities

Practicality is king when it comes to storage. We evaluate overall capacity to ensure it’s suitable for the target age group and check interior compartments for logical organization. Dedicated spaces for water bottles, lunch containers, and frequently needed items are essential. We also look for thoughtful extras like insulated compartments or tech protection. Flexibility matters too—kids’ needs change daily, and a bag should adapt accordingly. We pack each bag with age-appropriate essentials to see how it performs in real-world chaos.

The Bottom Line
Through this rigorous testing process, we identify the bags that truly stand out—combining performance, comfort, and durability to meet the demands of both kids and parents. Because a great bag isn’t just about carrying stuff; it’s about supporting little adventurers as they navigate the world, one snack spill and rainy morning at a time.
